Don Valley Stadium and Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park

Don Valley Stadium opened in 1990 as a multi-sport facility and was the home of the Sheffield Eagles Rugby League team. In 2013, despite the site being the second largest athletics stadium in the UK, Sheffield City Council closed the site to save money. The stadium was demolished and the site redeveloped privately. This involved the creation of a number of facilities such as the Oasis Academy and the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre. The site didn't lose its sporting roots, however, as part of it became Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. This includes a new stadium (the Steel City Stadium) for the Sheffield Eagles. More recently, it has seen the construction of the Park Community Arena (also known as the Canon Medical Arena) which is the new home for the Sheffield men's (Sharks) and women's (Hatters) basketball teams.
