Sheffield Castle
A mottle and bailey castle was originally built on this site in the 11-12th century. After this was destroyed, a stone castle was built in the 13th century. Famous for once having Mary, Queen of Scots as a prisoner in the 16th century, this castle was eventually destroyed by order of parliament in the 17th century.
Between the first and second world wars, an indoor market was built on the site. This was extended into the building shown in the first image below in the early 60s. The market was closed in 2013, when a new market was built on The Moor, and demolished in 2015. Extensive archeological excavations have been carried out on the site while it is being determined how the site will be developed next.
