Staybrite and Tinsley Wire

Sheffield already had a thriving steel industry, but it was probably the invention of stainless steel in early 1900s and its development at the Staybrite works which really made Sheffield world renown as the Steel City. This was probably due to the use of stainless steel in the production of cutlery. The works operated from about 1908 until the early 1980s. Although some of the buildings were demolished by the early 1990s, the remaining buildings remained standing until the early 2010s. The site has mainly been disused ever since.

Across Sheffield Road, Tinsley Wire was set up in 1933 and by the 1970s was the third largest wire producer in the UK. The site was closed in 2006. The buildings were demolished over the next 10 years and, since 2017, has become the location of an Ikea store.
