Tinsley Towers

These famous Sheffield landmarks were build in 1937-1938 for the coal-fired power station built in 1921 to support the local steel industry. As the industry fell into decline, the power station was no longer required and was closed in 1980 and then demolished except for these two towers due to the danger of their proximity to the M1 viaduct (opened in 1968). Following the strengthening of the viaduct in 2006, it was deemed safe to demolish the towers and this took place in 2008 with a vast crowd coming out to watch the 3am demolition.

A biomass power station was completed in 2014 on the site and can be seen in the centre of the 2024 image surrounded by the water treatment works.
